Description: [From their web site] 500 acres of beautiful countryside; meadows, woodland and lakes. Dozens of migratory bird species can be seen in summer and winter. Hides with disabled access allow visitors to get closer to nature. Wheelchair accessible aviaries allow close proximity to many bird species normally hard to see in the wild. See Europe’s finest collection of waterbirds, and wetlands carefully restored as a haven for wildlife. Heated glass-fronted viewing station, Millennium Garden designed by Chelsea Flower Show award winner Piet Ouldolf, Courtyard Café and gift shop.
We visited Pensthorpe on a very windy December day and were impressed by the facilities there. The hard surfaced areas are ideal for wheelchair users, enabling us to get right up to the water's edge. There are trails deemed suitable for disabled that are grass and can be very tricky after wet weather, a member of my party slipped on the mossy grass to end up on his bum! The areas that are not wheelchair accessible are clearly marked on the map and on the ground. In dry weather the park is largely accessible and the waterfowl collection allows very close views in very natural surroundings (I had to ask whether the beautiful Smews were wild or captive!). There are plenty of "real" birds too, with a hide overlooking a scrape. With the restaurant and shop this is a most enjoyable day out.
